Whole School Programs

All teachers at Kurmond Public School build their program around the current NSW syllabus documents. These are developed in Stages generally covering a two year program of work. School stages are:

Early Stage 1 – Kindergarten

Stage 1 – Years 1 and 2

Stage 2 – Years 3 and 4

Stage 3 – Years 5 and 6

We often formulate our class structures around the stages with composite classes and then create two-year learning programs based on an odd year / even year setup. The major focus of our programs is around Literacy and Numeracy, with explicit teaching in these areas and also integrated into other Key Learning Areas.

The English syllabus covers the areas of Speaking and Listening, Reading and viewing, and Writing and Representing.  Our school has extensive resources to support vibrant and relevant literacy learning.  A major aspect of our Kindergarten program is the Jolly Phonics program, which is a fun interactive program teaching the key phonics skills for reading and writing. This then continues with the essential skills of spelling, grammar and punctuation. Our literacy programs are enhanced with the online Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress programs which students and families can access from home.

Our Mathematics syllabus divides mathematical learning into strands; Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability, Working Mathematically. Mathematics lessons are supported with the use of concrete materials, problem solving and online applications such as Mathletics, which can be accessed anytime from home as well as school.

With many connections demonstrated between subject areas, Kurmond Public School uses an integrated approach to History, Science, and Human Society in the Environment. Teachers have created a two year cycle of theme units for each stage that draw on outcomes from each of these subject areas.

Creative and Performing Arts plays a major role in our curriculum, with all students given opportunities to develop their creative expression through Music, Visual Arts, Drama and Dance. These experiences are often integrated with the work done in theme units.

The school values the importance of the Physical Education and Health programs in our student’s education. Regular time is committed to sporting and physical activities and programs are in place to promote and educate our students in personal health and development issues such as nutrition, growth and development, relationships, safety and choices.

Throughout all of our curriculum areas, the school supports the perspectives of multicultural education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, our Asian connections, sustainability and environmental issues and the integrated use of ICT.
